Copper thieves have been regularly stealing copper pipe and even the tubing from inside air conditioners and under homes. But it’s not often they simply cut the entire heat pump loose from the house and cart it off. An out-of-town homeowner says he came back from Maryland recently to find that’s what had happened to him. Richard Wilson has someone locally who keps an eye on the house, and that man told him the unit was where it belonged back on April 3rd. But sometime between then and last Friday, it had been taken. Wilson reports the unit is too heavy to be toted off by one person, but deputies noted no tracks from a vehicle in the yard. They have the name of one suspect, but have not made any arrests. The investigation continues.
A Wilkes homeowner is cleaning up the mess and making sure he has a complete list of the items stoeln by what appears to be several people on Friday. Roger Michael says he came home Friday afternoon to find his side door kicked in and the house looking like it had been ransacked. A gun safe had been opened using the combination and several firearms were taken. according to the police report, the locaiton of the combination was known by only a few people. The group of thieves also stole several jars of change and a large amount of jewelry. The list of stolen items runs three and a half pages, and totals nearly 10-thousand dollars so far. Detectives were able to obtain several clues, including the fact that one of the thieves was short. They also obtained several sets of fingerprints. Michale provided them with a few suspect names, and they are continuing to locate those people and interview them. In addition, a local Lowes Food store reports a person came in over the weekend and tried to convert more than 500-dollars in change to other forms of cash. A copy of the store video tape has been made and reviewed concerning that person. So far, no arrests have been made.
