Ferguson Community Center Unwired

A local gathering place may not host many gatherings for a while, after thieves stole much of the building's electrical wiring. The Ferguson Community Center was hit by copper thieves over the weekend, according to Steve Blevins, who found the break-in damage about 10:30 Monday morning. The person or people broke into the back door of the building, and were apparently in it for some time. They had time to remove all the 600-volt wiring from the building -- about 25-thousand dollars worth of wire. In the process, they tore up the ceiling, causing about 5-thousand dollars damage. For good measure, the thief took a smoke machine, valued at about 150-dollars.
Blevins called deputies to another location in Ferguson later in the day Monday, after he received an anonymous tip as to who the burglars might be. Deputies arrested 33-year old Jerry Ray Bowman and 30-year old Daniel Scott Hartley after finding a significant amount of copper wire, a breaker box, and the stolen smoke machine. Much of the wire had been stripped and burned in a barrel. Both men confessed to the break-in, and are jailed on charges of breaking and entering and of theft.
