Kindergarten Entry Birthdate to Become August 31st

The General Assembly agreed yesterday to push the cutoff birth date for children to enter kindergarten each fall several weeks earlier. The Senate voted unanimously in favor of a bill to require a child to turn five years old before Aug. 31 of the school year in order to enter school. The current law sets the date at October 16. The change would begin in the fall of 2009 if accepted by Gov. Mike Easley.
The change will help narrow the age range of children in their first year of public school. He said that should ultimately improve student performance. Researchers say the shift would result in about 15,400 students fewer students entering the public schools in the first year it takes effect.
