A Wilkes man and his girlfriend are accused of taking a woman’s debit card from her purse while she slept. The crime was reported over the weekend. The 30-year old victim says she went to pay bills online and found out her checking account was negative. She checked her purse and found her debit card was missing, and there was a box of checks missing from the house, too. The man, who is an acquaintance of hers, and his girlfriend, had stayed at her house a couple of days, leaving last Wednesday. She says when she called the bank, they said someone had used the card last Tuesday. According to the victim, her friend’s mother’s debit card also disappeared the same day. Because the suspect in the case has not been arrested, we’re withholding the names of the people involved. Deputies don’t say how much money was spent without permission, but they note the bank is cooperating with the investigation.
