Critical Blood Shortage: Less than 1 Day Supply

News, Wilkes, Wilkes County, Wilkesboro
The American Red Cross says there is a critical shortage of blood right now, with three of the most-used blood types at less than one day's supply. While the need for type O-negative, type A-negative, and type B-negative blood is the most acute, the post-holiday period always brings blood shortages due to the number of drive that can't be held in December because of the holidays. While all blood types are needed, the Red Cross says the shortage of type O blood is of particular concern, because it is the most commonly-used type, and is the one that often allows trauma patients to live long enough to make it through surgery. A Red Cross news release says eligible donors are needed immediately to make up the difference, and a number of blood drives have been scheduled to give donors plenty of opportunity to come in.
