Man Arrested for Car Break-In

Wilkesboro police have arrested a local man for stealing items from an unlocked pickup in the Lowe's parking lot, and they believe they prevented a future crime in the process. Dustin Perkins, the man several employees of Lowes described as the thief last Wednesday night when James Weaver's pickup was broken into, was arrested later in the week as he tried to cash one of the checks from the checkbook he'd stolen from the front seat. He was trying to cash the check at the victim's own bank. Police say when he was questioned, Perkins gave up the checkbook and a key ring, which appeared to come form a n auto dealer and had two keys to Chevy vehicles on it. They called Empire Chevrolet to verify the vehicles were actually on the lot, and both were still there. However, there was no explanation for how Perkins got the keys. He was arrested for multiple charges, and is held on a 5-thousand dollar secured bond, according to police.
