No Smoking in PUblic Buildings Starting July 1
News, Wilkes, Wilkes County, Wilkesboro
The Wilkes Board of Health has unanimously adopted a no smoking rule for all buildings and vehicles used by the public that are owned and/or leased by the county and municipalities within Wilkes County. The rule applies to Wilkes County Government and the Towns of North Wilkesboro, Wilkesboro, and Ronda. Smoking is prohibited inside these buildings and is not allowed near a public entrance or air intake vent. These rules also prohibit smoking within 50 feet of the Wilkes County Department of Social Services and the Wilkes County Health Department.
According to Health Promotion Coordinator Josh Swift, this rule will take affect on July 1, 2008. Wilkes County is one of the first counties in the state to adopt this measure. North Carolina legislators adopted House Bill 24 in 2007 which gives local Boards of Health the opportunity to pass rules governing tobacco use in buildings and vehicles owned by county and city/town municipalities.
