News, Wilkes, Wilkes County, Wilkesboro

Law enforcement officers in the area are on the lookout for two automobiles stolen over the weekend. Wilkesboro police report a 2001 Nissan Xterra was stolen from the parking lot of the Fast Track on West Highway 421 early Saturday morning. The driver, Jenny Pennington, had gone inside and used the restroom, and says that an acquaintance who was riding with her, known only by her first name of Lori, drove off while she was inside. According to the crime report, she called police over 12 hours later to report the theft, saying she went to a friend's house to sleep after the SUV was stolen "because her mother would be mad at her and she needed to rest." Police have since recovered her cell phone, which was in the Xterra when it was taken. Total loss in the theft is over 16-thousand dollars.

A car of somewhat lesser value was reported stolen after it was returned to the owner. It's a 91 Buick Century valued at about 14-hundred dollars, belonging to Karen Kilby of rural North Wilkesboro. The theft was reported Saturday afternoon, two days after the car had been taken. According to Kilby, an acquaintance had taken the car without asking on Thursday evening, wrecked it and returned it. She says she learned somehow that the person had been issued a ticket for the wreck, but deputies have been unable to confirm which agency might have written that citation. However, the person is jailed on other charges. Their name has not yet been released. Kilby says she sold the car for scrap shortly after it was returned.
