News, Wilkes, Wilkes County, Wilkesboro

The summer has brought work on several projects at Wilkes County schools, which have been completed in time for students to enjoy them when they return to class Monday. The $31 million renovation project has been completed at West Wilkes, Wilkes Central and North Wilkes high schools. The work at East Wilkes is expected to be done by Christmas, according to Superintendent Dr. Steve Laws. He says there have also been aesthetic improvements at Ronda-Clingman and Wilkesboro elementary schools, Laws added.
The district's technology initiative is having an effect on classrooms this year, too. Fourth and fifth grade students will each get PDA devices. They’ll be used for writing, learning keyboarding skills, math projects and students can download e-books onto them. Laws told the Record, “We will also have over 200 of our SMART classrooms. These classrooms will have a SMART board, with 72-inch screen, instead of a chalkboard. You can do all kinds of projects on these. Teachers will have a laptop that will interact with the boards. The kids are just enthralled with the possibilities of that."
