Drought Status Update

The drought status in Wilkes County remains unchanged this week, with the entire county considered in the Extreme, or second-highest, stage of drought. According to figures released by the state, in our area only Allegheny county remains in the D2, or severe, status. All other counties surrounding Wilkes are also in D3 status. Statewide, 73-percent of North Carolina is under some sort of drought status, and the remaining areas are considered abnormally dry. Last year at this time, all of the state was experiencing drought of some level, although conditions were better in Wilkes last year than now. This week in 2007, the county was in D2, severe, status.
