More good water news today. The rains from Fay last week soaked in enough to keep the Reddies River above the threshold of 20 cubic feet per minute all this week -- a significant amount above, actually. Latest measured flows are 33 cubic feet per minute, and falling only a foot or so a day, less than a quarter of the rate they were falling early in the week. All that means mandatory water use restrictions in North Wilkesboro are a thing of the past. At least for now.
City officials set their automated notification system to call water customers today and inform them the mandatory restrictions that have been in place since the end of July are now considered voluntary. So while they don't encourage wasting water, things such as lawn watering, car washing and other activities that had been prohibited for the past five weeks are now allowed once again. However, town officials say, the drought could cause restrictions to be placed again, should the Reddies once again fall below 20 cubic feet per minute for three days in a row.
