Hundreds of Surry County families showed up yesterday for a United States Department of Agriculture food distribution in Elkin. Officials spent two hours handing out the bags of food, which almost ran out. Officials said 1,200 more families were expected at today’s distribution in Mount Airy .The food, which includes meat, fruit and other items, is distributed based on income levels and household size. Those receiving food are required to show valid identification. According to the USDA Web site, “the Commodity Supplemental Food Programs is a Federally funded program, which works to improve the health of low-income pregnant and breastfeeding women, other new mothers up to one year postpartum, infants, children up to age six, and elderly people at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA commodity foods. It provides food and administrative funds to states to supplement the diets of these groups.”
