A sheriff’s deputy who spotted a person driving that he knew didn’t have a valid license ended up chasing the man, which resulted in a crash that damaged a church sign and ended up with the man behind bars for drug possession. It happened just after midnight this morning. The deputy, on patrol at Fishing Creek Road and Speedway Road, recognized 16-year old Samuel Wentworth, who he knew from previous encounters did not have a driver’s license. The deputy tried to stop Wentworth, who sped off instead, prompting the chase which reached speeds of 80 miles an hour. having turned his headlights off a short time before, Wentworth tried to make a high-speed turn from Clark Road onto Shew Ridge Mission Road. He slid through the intersection, hitting the sign out front of Parks Grove Baptist Church and sliding through the yard, nearly hitting the tree. When the deputy ordered Wentworth from the car, he discovered he was trying to get rid of a mouthful of marijuana by chewing it up and swallowing it. An ensuing search turned up drug paraphernalia in the car. Wentworth faces multiple charges in the case.
